Can I sue the leasing company for denying us our lease?
2 friends and I applied for an apartment and we were denied the lease application. When asked why they denied us our lease application, which by all accounts should have been in the bag, the company refused to tell us anything and in fact told us to go elsewhere and basically leave them alone. They gave us inconsistent answers to our questions, and we were left high and dry because of it.
Can we sue?
You need actual loss to sue. They do not have to give you a reason.
You were not "left high and dry", it isn’t as if there is a housing shortage.
Rent elsewhere.
No. You haven’t suffered any loss. "In the bag" is just your opinion.
You can sue anyone for anything. Whether or not the case will go anywhere is what really matters.
If you feel you were discriminated against, you should contact your state’s bureau of labor and industries or BOLI. They will investigate whether or not your claim is real and if it is they will prosecute.
Other than that, i don’t really have any other suggestions besides trying to find another place to live!
Best of luck.
you are welcome to go hire an attorney at $300/hour if you wish. unless you can prove they descriminated against you on race, sex, ethinic, etc… you do not have an argument.
they can deny your application for any reason except above.
Sue for WHAT? You have ZERO liquidated damages! Unless you are a protected group AND you can prove that their decision was based on discrimination of a protected group, you are out of luck. They don’t have to lease to you if they don’t want to…period!
You can sue over anything. If your question is really can you win, no.
I generally prefer not to rent to a group of unrelated people becuase when things go south in their friendship, it tends to become my problem.
There is nothing to sue for, you were not entitled the space.
