New information and communications technologies are redefining the oil and gas industry: Huawei offers a wealth of experience
Today, 150 years after the first successful oil extraction from a drilled well, all underground oil resources are depleted. By necessity, oil companies are exploring fields in deep waters, pre-salt zones, and unconventional zones.
With 60 years in tow, Daqing, China’s largest oil field, located in Heilongjiang, the country’s northernmost province, has faced numerous challenges in reservoir replacement, the pressure to maintain stable production, and cutting costs and efficiency improvements.
According to Zhang Tiegang, former deputy director of engineering at the Daqing Field Exploration and Development Research Institute, seismic exploration technologies detecting oil reservoirs and Gas had been the preferred method for most oil companies. The increase in seismic exploration, along with the decrease in well drilling, he said, has become a widely used measure in the industry. However, high precision and massive data processing have brought challenges for seismic exploration and exploration and development in the reservoirs. With the expansion of a single seismic exploration zone that now covers more than 2,000 square kilometers, the volume of seismic data collected using broadband, wide azimuth, and high-density technology exceeds 1 TB per square kilometer.
To help the Daqing Field address these issues, Huawei created a cloud dedicated to oil and gas exploration. This data center in the cloud improves computing potential eight times. It has similarly enhanced seismic data processing in the pre-stacking stage five times, going from 400 square kilometers to 2,000 square kilometers, making the work area’s requirements compatible. Additionally, AI and big data capabilities are in use to re-analyze 10 PB of historical customer exploration data to extract new value and support mining decision making, bringing enormous added value to the field.
Huawei empowers a wide range of industries with the 5G network. In the oil and gas industry, 5G technologies are changing the operability of seismic data collection. Huawei has put the 5G network characteristics, including broadband, extensive connectivity, and low latency, to help achieve high-speed seismic data return, reduce manual wiring load, and significantly improve collection efficiency.
Additionally, Huawei’s 5G networks are already in use in oil fields and stations for robot and drone inspection purposes and augmented reality and virtual reality.
Moreover, the Huawei Horizon Digital Platform helps industry customers to break down legacy silo service systems and rapidly release micro-format service applications to meet complex and changing industry needs. For example, Huawei deployed an enterprise cloud for SONATRACH, an Algerian state-owned oil company. This cloud solution manages and coordinates multiple data centers, eliminates resource silos, and dramatically improves operations’ overall efficiency.
